In Halls Creek WA for the Rodeo

Posted: 28 June 2011

Madjitil Moorna will spend the July school holidays in remote Halls Creek.

This will be the third visit for the large group when we bring performing arts and many other talents to share with the local kids and community.  This visit is timed to include the Halls Creek Rodeo weekend – a major event on the calendar across the Kimberley.

Concerts will flank the Rodeo events and the choir with local musicians and kids will record the Halls Creek Rodeo Song in the following week.

A local person will be working alongside each of the four artists travelling with Madjitil Moorna, to share the delivery of workshops for kids in performing arts, crafts, and film-making.   Management of the project will also be shared by local people.  All activities will build skills and confidence towards the second Halls Creek Festival in August 2011.

Singers are excited to think that they are helping to create opportunity, for children and families in this remote community.

Invited by local leader and teacher Doreen Green, Madjitil Moorna’s first trip from Perth was in 2009.  A community concert was held at the end of a week of workshops and 600 attended.

In 2010 the choir returned with more activities and songs with another community concert being staged.  Meanwhile a committee of Halls Creek people was organising the town’s first Nguyuru Waaringarrem Music Festival in August. The choir was invited back to polish acts and run workshops once again.

The documentaries of each visit have been made by Young Film-maker of the Year 2011 Mat de Koning, making an impact on the kids and a great enthusiasm the choir’s July visit.

The choir is supported by sponsorship from Healthway and donations from hundreds of individuals.

Dental Team returns to Halls Creek

Posted: August 2009

From 8 to 14 August the Kimberley Dental Team returned to Halls Creek.  Their visit was very successful and enhanced by the ‘sing and play tooth fairies’, with the help of Craig Crocodile from Dental Health Services.

The Halls Creek Rodeo Song (words written by the children of Halls Creek District High School and George Walley) has been recorded and is being enjoyed by the kids – big and small.

Madjitil Moorna – Halls Creek Singing Project 2009

Posted: June 2009

In May 2009 Madjitil Moorna, travelled from Perth to Halls Creek for a unique project built around cultural exchange. The project focused on promoting positive self-esteem and good health through the healing power of singing together in Aboriginal languages as well as English.

School children, young mums, disengaged young people, elders and families had access to the choir during the week timetabled by the school. Led by Aboriginal musical directors, Della Rae Morrison and George Walley the choir taught our songs and wrote new songs, and performed with the children at a concert for their families for the whole town.

At the end of a week of workshops the group travelled to Kununurra to perform in the high profile indigenous concert, the Barramundi Concert as part of the Ord Valley Muster. The project was initiated by an Aboriginal teacher at the Halls Creek District High school.
